Ethical Hedonist January Horoscope 2017
March 21-April 20
Can’t you fill the build-up? No? Well, you will as January departs the post-hangover phase and heads back to real-life. Normally noisy and pushy, you’ve already discovered that in this phase, using your nuanced street-smarts is the better option. That means observing rather than flying off the handle; meditating as opposed to speaking your mind; and opening doors for people (“Age before beauty, poppet”) and not diving past slow-coaches first (“Pearls before swine, dahling”). Major career progress can be achieved this month if you’re prepared to act holistically (not just on your own behalf but with due regard for others – think a bit like a guru!) if not strategically, especially around the 11th when Pluto boosts your ruler Mars; the latter has to behave itself while in Pisces. Then, on the 28th, it’s take-off: Mars enters Aries – and oh, wow, fasten seatbelts. Now it’s gloves-off-time and you can reveal yourself. All that plotting and planning and waiting has been worth it. The ground has been prepared. At the end of the month you’re in Boudicca/Spartacus mode – but hopefully you’ve learnt some subtlety while playing Mother Theresa/prophet Job in the build-up.
April 21-May 21
If The Three Musketeers’ motto “All for one and one for all” never meant anything much to you, it certainly will this month. This is because from the 3rd, ruler Venus is in Pisces and the solar house of camaraderie, charity, common causes and action in the common good. No, you’re not about to turn into a saintly creature and martyr yourself. Actually, on the surface of life, you’re more socially active: if you thought after all the festive dos that you couldn’t stuff away any more veggie vol-au-vents and verbal volleys, then ready yourself for yet more party platters and patter. Perhaps the difference now is that you’re the party animal with a cause – either humanitarian or business. By the 12th a creative or ‘selfless’ energy is at its most intense. By the 20th, all this engagement with the world could help you bring about a very big change in your personal/social world. Spiritual-mystical-psychological topics or approaches certainly dominate your life as Mars slips into Aries towards the end of the month: keep the mind open to feeding the inner self through prayer, relaxation, detoxing, yoga or even swimming with dolphins. Because it is this energised self that will be the springboard to change, now or later this year.
May 22-June 21
For all the angst about money, the overall message of ruler Mercury is not at all bad provided you decide once for all to get to the bottom of some sort of material issue, linked in some way to borrowings, tax or any shared assets (such as a home). Mercury starts the year in retrograde which is another way of saying that life is giving you a bit more time to sort out a personnel issue in your life, especially around the 8th when Mercury moves direct. Remember that these days you’re taking a harder line on associates and colleagues because you’re asking: What’s the point of this and that? How’s this person helping me? Then from the 12th, Mercury’s back in the money house and realistic Capricorn, and revives issues you will have identified back in November 2016 – these issues may be material but they could also be emotional. The 7th intensifies your determination to stand and deliver on an issue and not listen to negativity. This is bold with Sun on Pluto. The 29th is also another key date when Mercury hits Pluto – here again you really are shouting something from the rooftops – money is one of the themes but all this is about getting respect and digging out any nonsense. Gosh, it’s all happening (and for the best)!
June 22-July 22
So much energy is being poured into ‘managing’ people – and for you it’s all in a good cause, not about manipulation as a power game: at least one hopes not. I mean, the Alexis Carrington approach is so glitter ball Eighties. Circumstances require you to win, wheedle or otherwise obtain cooperation to maintain a complex balancing act linked to home and daily routines. This is the highlight of 2017’s first Full Moon which takes place in your sign close to powerful Pluto and in a challenging link to Jupiter and Saturn. Part of you wants to go a bit crazy and tell the world to suck scissors, but you know that’s probably not a great idea. This Full Moon encourages you to be both honest with yourself and cathartically acknowledge selfish pangs but also to be responsible: other people depend on you, and other people are in a position to make life hard or easy for you. There is respite: the 11th raises your sights on the bigger picture (events may encourage this – such as an early break); and the 29th is a fantastic moment to come up with a new life plan that suits you and others. Aquarius New Moon on the 28th holds the potential for a financial or domestic arrangement with mutual benefits.
July 23-August 23
A change in lifestyle can sound so easy in the magazines and newspapers. Just buy a book, follow the ghost-written dicta of some gobby celebrity guru who has a big house in the countryside and hey presto, you’re reborn. So I know how hard this can be. But with Sun and Pluto in your house of health, and Mercury there from the 12th, this is the right moment to look carefully at what you eat, how you work, who you share your life with, how you use your mind when you wake up at night, to assess what needs improving – or not! It’s not all bad after all. Forbes has identified the ‘vegetarian option’ as the key food trend of 2017 as concerns grow about the link between mood and meat. And ‘wellness travel’ is the new thing in holidays – fancy your own yoga instructor and clean eating in Cuba? You’ll be making a key health decision around the 29th as Mercury merges with Pluto – or if not a health decision, a life-changing one to do with work, routine or home organisation. The overall pattern in your chart identifies lifestyle as the one thing you can change now for broader alterations in life direction.
August 24-September 22
People seem so surprised when Virgo exhibits an organic expression of desire – it seems like a fissure in an ice cap that has opened up letting out tons of hot steam: in other words, a snapshot of Iceland! But people forget that Virgo is an earth sign; the passion is ingrained, not worn like a flaming flamenco frill; it subsists behind a mask of cool care and critiquing. I’m harping on this because Pluto and Sun sit in an area of the chart which is all about what causes the blood to rise, the skin to sweat. You are now immersed in a project of some kind that gives better expression to why you are a tenant on planet Earth. People who thought they knew you are saying behind your back, “Well, I didn’t see that coming!” It’s because you are showing how much you care. When ruler Mercury moves direct on the 8th in this house of self-expression, you will find then or in the immediate weeks following that you have an easier time to get an activity moving which derives from your heart: this could be anything from a creative project to improving the lot of your child (if you have one). Blood, sweat, holler: yes, let it all out.
September 23-October 23
2017 starts with heightened focus on the home and family, and the potential is for some big changes arising from decisions made by you. Incidentally this could be about anything – whether you finally decide to rip out the bug-concealing carpet for polished (but slippery?) parquet or tell someone close something that needed to be said. That’s astrology – from the sublime to the ridiculous. The 11th and 29th are dates to watch for these key moments. Pluto in your house of the family is powerful, slow-moving stuff, so something you say or do now will have far-reaching consequences. Yes, it’s true that lucky Jupiter is still in your sign, and you might think it’s all go for Libra. That’s not quite true this month: Jupiter is challenged all the way in January – the basic message is to exercise restraint, measure your actions, watch what you say and stay realistic and proportionate: get this balance right (and Libra is the sign of the scales) and January can be a fantastic month for putting things in place for later blossoming. Ruler Venus is all about making life lovely for others right now, especially in the work area – exercise some self-sacrifice around the 12th, when Venus merges with spiritualising Neptune, and you’re the eventual winner.
October 23-November 22
By the end of this month, the one thing no one will say of you is that you lack an opinion. Want to know why? Well, Scorpio has two ruling planets: Mars this month is moving through house of passions; and passionate Pluto is crawling backwards and forwards through your communications sector. This is potent, soapbox stuff. Long known to be ‘secretive’, Scorpio is ready to tell it all, which just about sums up January for you, no matter your life circumstances. The 11th in particular is a date to watch because around this time, the two ruling planets link – in your favour. An opportunity may arise to display a natal talent or to put some punch into a communication. A message has to be got home. This kind of energy will help a sale, an argument, a lesson or negotiation. Similar energies this month add up to the same thing: articulate, explain, reveal. The caveat being, this works for you provided that what you say is the truth and nothing but. ‘Post-truth politics’ may be all the rage, but it won’t work for you.
November 23-December 21
For some time now you have been expanding your social and professional range. Ruler Jupiter in Libra in solar house of Aquarius is all about making links, personally, professionally and idealistically. There is a ‘common cause’ – which could be your business or charitable campaign. But a journey is no fun at all without turbulence or a swell or two to give tummy tickles – and an anecdote to relate over a glass of a rustic Cabernet (linked to longevity, by the way, thanks to detoxifying procyanidins). So, this month, be ready to slow the pace a bit as you come to realise that not all in your ‘new’ family of contacts and allies are on your side. Or is it that you need to review your own approach? This is not at all bad news. A break ‘rests’ a momentum that may need some correction. If you’re looking for a clue to any potential hitch, look to the money. Some kind of major change in material attitude or structure is required to marry intention with realism. You don’t need me to tell you that a project that’s all idealism is doomed to failure. But a project measured by a financial dial – now you’re talking! So, what an interesting month you have. By the end of it, you really will be primed for progress.
December 22-January 20
The year starts with a splendid sextile between Jupiter and Saturn. Say that again? Basically the trend is very helpful to you. Career has raised potential for growth, and at this time, your inner workings (thinking, experience, past contacts or reaction to negativity) are nicely tuned to winning conduct and approach. And because Saturn rules Capricorn, the happy career message is enhanced. A ‘sextile’ is a 60-degree marker, the aspect of opportunity: in this phase, outside life is more likely to help than hinder, provided you’re working towards eliminating thoughts and behaviours that are life-denying or dishonest (as if!). This really is a personal power month for you with Sun and Pluto in your sign, and the two planets merging on the 7th. There is a need to push something quite hard, particularly in getting a message across, and Mars helps this. Perhaps colleagues, neighbours, siblings, students or just people in your orbit need to understand something or come to terms with a decision you’ve made. Certainly you’re in decisive mode in January – and frankly few can resist your call or instruction.
January 21-February 19
It’s fair to say that your sense of independence (i.e. your sense of entitlement when it comes to acting against the grain) is pretty intense as 2017 kicks off. And so far as business and your social and professional networks are concerned, this is no bad thing. Aquarius is valued for its high intuition, tendency to see ahead of the game and readiness to kick against fashion – also to set it. Yes, you really are Trouble. But without Trouble, how do we progress as a species? How this works for you is being decided behind the scenes, in your deeper thoughts, your taking time out for you (‘me-time’), in facing past memories that may be holding you up – or people who have hindered you. Your kind of ‘independence’ also involves rewriting your life story so that what seemed like a negative was actually a preparation for a stronger you. At the moment you’re peeling away useless people, and working on ways of bringing a better accord between the actual you and how you pay your bills. This month you make a decision about money and how it must serve you, not you serving it through soul-destroying compromises. That’s right, make some Trouble! But the outcome can be, in the longer term, fewer sleepless nights.
February 20-March 20
Shall I keep this simple? As ambitious as you are with elitist Saturn in your career house, this is a month not to get all pushy-pushy. Not so far as career or public duty is concerned. If you imagine the world is against you I have good news: it is not. Part of the problem is that Life does insist on proceeding at its own pace, and not always at a pace set by you or your hopes. Hold your horses! Give it a rest. Instead of fixating on prizes, how about working a lot more on foundations – on finding the right people who can help you longer term. The chart message is that Pisces is crying out for new friends and allies – and with Pluto in the relevant house, you have the charisma to draw the right people to you. This Pluto is also very good for generating money, so there are compensations in the slower, more patient approach. Towards the end of January, Mars adds punch to your campaign to increase income, though look to next month for happier results there. Meantime, with Venus in your sign, chances increase of a style makeover. Women should go for bralettes (nipple definition allowed, or so Vogue claims) and men for ‘childhood references’ (such as street pyjamas). Personally I’d just prefer a fused black coffee with a balanced blend of grapefruit seed, grape seed, pomegranate seed, and black cumin seed. Does wonders for heart, skin and hair. Yum yum.
