A Himalayan Pashmina is For Life, Not Just for Christmas

As a journalist who writes about fashion and icons, I have never been enthrall to the twinkling mirage of passing trends or fads.

I prefer my fashion to be eternal. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved the idea of owning sublime, head-turning pieces that never date, never go out of fashion and become a trusted companion. A timeless, elegant day dress, shawl or a coat that I can throw on, and feel utterly at home, confident and cocooned in a cloak of treasured, luxurious familiarity, year after year.

My First Himalayan Pashmina – A Treasured Fashion Accomplice!

That’s how I feel about my very first, hand-woven, sublimely soft pashmina from the foothills of the Himalayas. When I was a very young reporter, working for Femail at the Daily Mail, I interviewed quite a few actresses and supermodels, and they were always swathed in their beloved pashminas’. One supermodel told me she liked to wrap herself up in her pashmina for plane trips, as it gave her an extraordinary feeling of warmth, comfort and security, no matter how cool the first class cabin became! That was when I bought my first pashmina.

Of course not all pashmina’s are equal. Here at Ethical Hedonist, we support and champion a tiny jewel of a Fairtrade, artisan, pashmina workshop in Katmandu in Nepal. Pashm and Co and celebrates and supports the time-honoured skill of hand-looming pashmina scarves, shawls and blankets from the precious inner wool of the Himalayan mountain goat.

I don’t think I have ever owned a piece of clothing that feels so authentically luxurious, or so sublimely soft or reassuring in the midst of winter or chilly summer evenings.  I am drawn to the jewel-like colours, using azo-free dyes – from head-turning, playful rich sangria – to the most wonderful mink. There is a a colour to suit the most discerning, ethical goddess!
