Dress Like a Downton Abbey Duchess in Charity Shop Couture!

My fashion love affair with a bygone age of elegance and the art of the seamstress never dims. If you want to dress like Lady Mary or Lady Edith in Downton Abbey you can! Just raid your nearest upmarket charity shop, sale or posh antique fair for one of a kind vintage masterpieces – they are always in vogue and you will feel like a fashion aristocrat.

Nor does vintage fashion have to go with a regal priceless tag. You can find a dress worthy of a duchess from as little as ten pounds, although expect to pay closer to a hundred pounds for something really spectacular, and the money goes to a good cause.  I discovered this exquisite, bias cut, hand appliqué, velvet evening gown in a charity antique fair on the Isle of Wight. It was love at first site.  The charming lady who sold me the dress told me that it had once belonged to an heiress, with connections to Queen Victoria, and that her ancestors didn’t appreciate her closets filled with sensuous velvets, hand sewn,  twinkling sequin capes and gold, bias tissue silk gowns. I do! I can’t wait  to go dancing in my dream of a dress. Who knows who one might meet or what adventures a girl could have in a dress that demands such admiration?
