 Creepy-crawlie cocktail, anyone?

Polyrhacis Ant

Polyrhacis Ant

Say hello to your newest dietary staple – (look away now if you’re squeamish…) the Chinese Black Ant (or polyrhacism for short) is the hottest new ingredient to grace health enthusiasts’ shopping list. Kale, acai berries and coconut to name a few – us Brits love a super food. And we especially love to blend, puree, juice and pour them into the latest trendy health drink concoction. Thought you’d seen it all when gym bunnies began throwing back shots of apple cider vinegar? Think again. The Polyrhacis has been used for centuries by the ancient Chinese people to prolong their lives, boost the immune system and fight against various illnesses. Furthermore, with concerns surrounding how we’re going to feed the rapidly growing human population, it seems the future of food security may rest on these bite-sized protein-bombs. Staggeringly rich in amino acids, vitamins, trace elements and high in protein, these creepy crawlies make the perfect addition to a carbonated soft drink – so long Coca-Cola. The ‘edible insect food industry’ is predicted to reach more than £230 million by 2020 according to Food Manufacture, so join the critter revolution – creepy-crawly cocktail, anyone? www.radisso.com

Richard Branson has the business X-factor beating Simon Cowell to the top spot

Business Mogul Richard Branson

Business Mogul Richard Branson

Richard Branson is Britain’s preferred business mentor according to a new survey of small businesses by Everline, the digital lender for small businesses. The survey of 500 small business owners saw 40 per cent of respondents pick Branson as their preferred business mentor; digital entrepreneur and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg came in second with 13 per cent of votes, rising to 25 per cent amongst 18-34 year olds. Despite his global success, Simon Cowell struggled to show that he has the X-Factor for businesses with just 6 per cent of small business owners selecting him as their preferred business mentor. Trailing behind, our very own David Cameron was selected by just five per cent of small business owners, with Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg lagging even further behind on just 2 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. Russell Gould, managing director of Everline, commented: “When it comes to aspirational business leaders, it’s hard to see anyone knocking Richard Branson off the top spot anytime soon’. Self proclaimed ‘Dr Yes’ – its no surprise Branson’s positive, go-getting attitude has catapulted him to the top of the business charts. With Simon being beaten to the number one spot, we can’t help but feel it’s ‘rage against the machine’ all over again – hard luck Mr Cowell. www.virgin.com

Body conscious? Bag yourself a builder

Buff Builder

Buff Builders represent 9% of all professions working out regularly

According to a new study conducted by Sports Nutrition Company www.bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk, builders top the list of professions most dedicated to achieving a peachy butt, Popeye biceps and chiseled six-pack – hardly surprising when their job description practically includes shirtless summer days. Builders represent 10% of all professions in gyms across the UK, putting other stereotypically ‘tough’ professions, such as fire fighters (0.4%) and the police (0.3%), to shame. Top company bosses came in just behind builders, representing 9% of all professions sweating it out on the daily – indicating that working out could be a sure-fire sign of business success. The study also revealed that, shockingly, supposedly geeky professions such as IT workers came in the top ten hunkiest occupations; seemingly keen to build up more than just their brain power, they even came ahead of our heroes in the emergency services. So ladies, it seems you no longer need to choose between intelligence and Spartan aesthetics when hunting down your perfect partner – after all, statistics don’t lie… www.bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk
