Rococo Chocolate – the pied piper of chocolatiers? Who could possibly resist a heaven-scent invitation to come and wallow in chocolate for an entire evening at Rococo’s jewel box flagship store and twinkling tearoom in Knightsbridge, London?
That’s exactly what we did at the very first Ethical Hedonist event in London – entitled – A Chocolate Odyssey – as we spent a very decadent and inspiring evening discovering that there are more ways to consume and experience artisan and organic chocolate than just eating lots of the good stuff!
Rococo Chocolate as you can see, is just the most magical place to come and while away an hour or two. It’s like Willy Wonker’s for grown ups. So the scene was set. Our guests sipped impeccably delicious, organic, chocolate martinis, made by our brilliant mixologist Danielle, for Sacred Spirits, and grazed on jewel-like chocolate canapés. Then, we were transported by two talks with fascinating, luxuriant, chocolate themes.
Chantal Coady, the original chocolate punk entrepreneur gave a funny, fizzing account of her life as the original Princess of Artisan British Chocolatiers. Did you know that Chantal started her chocolate adventures from a squat? Do you remember when Belgium chocolate was the height of chocolate sophistication? It was also heart-warming to learn that her amazing mum calmly agreed that her first business loan could be secured against the family home. When Chantal talked about the complexity and subtle nuances in chocolate, which can rival any great grand cru wine, we were all left with a marvellous understanding of why we really truly love the dark stuff. And yes, it has to be dark chocolate. How interesting to learn that when you eat milk chocolate, the addition of milk inhibits the take up of all those lovely antioxidants!
Then it was time to introduce Dr Spiezia, the most charismatic A&E doctor from Naples, who has a cult following as an organic beauty guru. Dr Spiezia is the founder of Inlight Organic Skincare in Cornwall. This warm-hearted, funny, very authentic man gave the most a sparkling, amusing talk about his journey from being a rather stressed medic, who often had to resuscitate people – to finding his true calling as a scientist turned skincare wiz. Dr Spiezia put forward the rather tantalizing idea of organic chocolate, as a wonder ingredient in beauty. Wow! What a curious idea. Clearly, guilt free too. The highlight of the talk was hearing about his super new wonder mask – a Food of the Gods Chocolate Mask – bursting with antioxidants, and infused with the sweet scent of orange, to repair, plump and hydrate the delicate skin on the face until it resembles silk velvet.
After the talks, there was time for mingling, more cocktails charged with superfoods from Pukka Herbs and Organic Burst, and then everyone made a beeline for the chocolate counter! The star of the evening was undoubtedly the magnificent Gran Cru Grenada Bars; followed closely by the jewel-coloured truffles encrusted with gold leaf and slivers of raspberries. While the beauty buffs wanted to take home the chocolate mask and Inlight’s cult daily face oil, which just happens to come with the most intoxicating aromas of chocolate and vanilla!
