Wow! Peggy Seeger & Broadcaster Explode into Summer with Folksploitation!
August 1, 2012 in Archive
“Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale
Her infinite variety. Other women cloy
The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry
Where most she satisfies. . . .”
Antony and Cleopatra, Act 11, Scene 11, By William Shakespeare
Talent has nothing to do with age. Once upon a time Peggy Seeger was a girl on fire. Singing incendiary anthems about love, crime and alienation at the Newport Folk Festival and with Paul Robeson, singer, actor and civil rights champion in Trafalgar Square.
Universal themes you might say, that never go away, given the riots of last summer in London.
Peggy Seeger is still a girl on fire, aged 77. Now the Crown Princess of Folk, and eternal, rebel-woman, has collided with one of the hottest and most interesting producers in London. His name is Broadcaster. Together Peggy and Broadcaster have cooked up Folksploitation – a strange, magical and utterly compelling trip of an album which brilliantly reworks Seeger’s activist songbook. You just have to listen to it now! Check out The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – a song Ewan Macoll wrote for Peggy, after their first meeting. They would go on to have three children together and make music that could break your heart, while making you think too.
There isn’t one lacklustre track on this album. It’s smoking!
What are you waiting for? Let’s make this the album of 2012!
