If there is one company that has helped to change the face of fashion and make Fairtrade a statement of style as well as conscience – it is PeopleTree, founded by the remarkable and quietly tenacious green entrepreneur and campaigner, Safia Minney. I first featured People Tree with Sienna Miller back in 2004. Now the label is stocked in Topshop and Safia has just received her MBE from the Queen. Her latest mission – to make sure our lovely, evergreen monarch has a wardrobe full of elegant, ethical, couture frocks: Safia, – I’m looking forward to your Royal Warrant!
This season PeopleTree features strong capsule collections by some iconic designers. Jessica Ogden is a highlight for her darling pinafore dresses and Karen Nicol for her Matilda jewel sweater dress – a witty statement piece to treasure and wear a million ways – with skinny jeans, primary colour tights or this season’s lissom, sensuous boots. I also like Richard Nicoll’s very grown up and alluring, silk ruffle shirtdress. Team it with the sheerest black opaque tights and spiky stilettos.
Plus, I defy any of you not to fall in love with at least one of the plethora of gorgeous dresses on offer from the main collection that grows more confident and alluring with each passing season, aided and abetted by talented in-house head of design Tracy Mulligan.
Choose from vibrant appliqué, draping and bold folk stories to brighten even the darkest winter day. Not to mention the perfect little black dress (LBD) – I’ve quite fallen in love with People Tree’s homage to Miss Jean Muir. This little LBD is fitted, wonderfully simple and restrained – from the sash tie – to the gorgeously demure, hand-embroidered lace collar detailing. Prices are great too for the quality, attention to detail and artisan craftsmanship.
