March 21-April 20
Poor poppet, life’s been a bit of trial of late, hasn’t it? More patient or stoic types might have rolled with the punches, but you don’t roll. You punch back, and so it’s ding-ding for a ding-dong, round 2, up against some grunting bruiser. The main reason for this is that your ruler Mars has been retrograde since late June, putting you at odds at times with friends and allies – are you really on the same page? Then on the 13th, Mars returns to Capricorn, reviving issues with authority/bosses/employers – and you’d be most wise to tread carefully. So, two things to look forward to. The first is the solar eclipse on the 11th which is really all about you and what you really care about – be this sex, creativity, your kids, sex, hobbies, sport, sex, etc. Great passion is indicated so whatever’s preoccupying you will prove all-consuming. The other happy news is that Mars turns direct on the 27th – time to be robust but tactful with bosses or any kind of authority. A problem can be quickly resolved now.
April 21-May 21
From the 6th and for the rest of August, ruler Venus is moving through Libra which for you is a fortunate place. You’ll find that more people than usual are coming to you for advice and guidance, and you’ll be a lot more in the mood to act as agony aunt or uncle. The most effective time for these efforts are the first half of the month when Mars boosts your social power to do things on behalf of others – what a sweet thing you are. The bold solar eclipse on the 11th sets a new pattern for family life over the next few months – a wonderful time to make plans and calculate costs, but you’d be wise to check carefully about what you can expect in terms of support from a partner or financial institution or bank. If you have sense, you’ll be a little guarded and not tell everyone what you have in mind. When Mars moves forward late in August, your ability to progress with a big idea is that much strengthened.
May 22-June 21
August starts with ruler Mercury still in reversal (or retrograde), which is not the big deal so many other astrologers make of it; but you’d be most wise to be extra cautious in how you word criticism, in who you send emails to (check the cc box before you press send) and generally be extra diligent in handling sensitive information. Retrogrades grant more time to get things right (like application forms!) but they also can interrupt the logical flow of events. Just be awake. Actually, communications (such as writing, speaking, broadcasting, selling) is the big topic of your August, thanks to the solar eclipse on the 11th which occurs in the 3rd solar house – place of Gemini. Look out for a major opportunity to raise your game, professionally, commercially or creatively. But the opportunity will require deft handling as well as time-management as heavy work is indicated. From the 19th, with Mercury moving forward, you’ll find there’s an easing in getting a message across, fewer cock-ups. And end of month, you’ll start to find that others in your circle are suddenly a lot more supportive after much inconstancy. Honestly, some people don’t know their arse from their elbow.
June 22-July 22
It would be fair to say that August calls on your famous skills for sidling craftily about and avoiding confrontation. And if a big boot approaches, who but a crab is more than capable of sinking into the sand, leaving only bubbles for a foe to pop. It’s not that there is a big boot approaching; more the need to think a lot more shrewdly about a financial situation – and if you wanted one piece of advice to remember: try to avoid making a fresh major financial commitment this month if you can. The solar eclipse on the 11th will most definitely present you with an option to re-order your cash priorities, but the peril is that enthusiasm will get the better of you. Much better to delay and go over the details – which is boring but the most cost-effective option. In recent times you have had to soldier on alone, and look, you’ve survived! Mars will help you find a helping hand or cooperation late month, which will prove helpful in September. So, view August as a ‘positioning’ month when you can gain an advantage by playing for time.
July 23-August 23
You don’t need me to tell you that you adore being the centre of attention. And, oh look! In August you are the cosmic centre of attention as Sun and Moon merge in Leo for an entrancing solar eclipse – this is extra powerful for you because the Sun rules Leo. In olden days, astrologers thought this a challenging omen (because the Sun gets blocked for a few minutes). But we’re more enlightened now. The eclipse is a chance to start afresh, and for you this has to do with personal projects, be they a relationship, work, image or ambitions. In some way, around the 11th when the eclipse occurs, you’ll be aware of an option to step up your game – it’s up to you how you play this because it’s not all plain sailing. Family and work situations may present problems as you try to progress. And over the next few weeks or months, some hard decisions may need to be made to free yourself up a bit. Part of this involves taking better care of yourself – to get anywhere you need stamina and bounciness. Ready for your spinach breakfast?
August 24-September 22
If friends think you’re a bit pensive, that’s because you are. ‘Pensive’ need not be ‘sad’. Pensive means deep in thought – a life situation is causing you some navel-gazing or reflection on the best way forward. Ruler Mercury is in retrograde in the chart house to do with the past, veiled enemies, spirituality and health. And it so happens that Mars is reversing opposite through the house of health and work – so the likelihood is that there are question marks about your occupation or ability to do something. It will be some relief to you to learn that greater clarity of thought will be found as August progresses. The solar eclipse on the 11th encourages you to alter your own expectations to adapt to changes – clinging to old and familiar ways of doing things is not the way. This new pattern will emerge over the next few months. More directly, Mars’ move direct towards the end of August very much favours those activities you wish to pursue in your own name; a renewed impetus will give you a fresh sense of hope and passion. Answers lie in new places, with new people. Get yourself a shredder.
September 23-October 23
A butterfly that emits an exquisite scent wherever it flutters – could this be Libra in August? Yes, most certainly. Fragrant Venus, once Aphrodite and Isis in past ancient cultures, now moves through the house she rules – Libra! So, the qualities of Venus – her pursuit of beauty, cleverness with money, dexterity in handling awkward people and love of joint enterprises – are all maximised in the sign that is home to these traits and qualities. Naturally, we’d be dead if life were that easy – I mean, why bother without all the bother? Of late, personal projects will have slowed as Mars reverses through your house of loves. This month it re-enters your chart house of family, reviving clan or domestic difficulties. How lovely! But then this month, Mars moves forward in late August and quite suddenly, if you’ve encountered blockages from loved ones, you’ll find it much easier to sweep problems aside and march on. The solar eclipse on the 11th occurs in the chart house of business and associations – many of you will be starting out commercially or within a group for financial or ethical purposes. Meanwhile, the surface of life will be quite lovely – what with that Venus. She will sweeten even the sour. An image makeover is entirely likely.
October 23-November 22
A powerful cosmic surge this month could do great things for your status within society, or in your local world, or in your career, provided you have a sharp sense of the challenges you face. Let me give you one example. Lucky Jupiter’s moving through your sign which generally is a positive. But the solar eclipse on the 11th forms a challenging relationship with Jupiter: could it be that you’ve not properly asked yourself whether you’re ready to take on a new responsibility? This is not a ‘killer’ question. I am not saying you should not take a chance to climb the ladder. What I am saying is that you’d be wise to be brutally honest with yourself – and if there’s something more you must learn to do a job properly, then learn it. The risk this month is that you over-hit. But this can be avoided with self-scrutiny. Also, think much more carefully about how you communicate with your world: focus less on the ‘sell’ or the flim-flam; more on practicalities and rules. Risk being dull and solid. No shame in it.
November 23-December 21
The very ‘thoughtful’ mood continues in your chart – but the solar eclipse on the 11th does signal a dramatic step out of your ordinary world, especially if you can feel the need now to explore, learn, confront or travel. This instinct will be felt in many different ways, depending on life circumstances. For some, there will be a powerful desire to get away or to move aboard. For others, a need to immerse yourself in the details of a new idea or philosophy. Business is well starred this month as Venus presides over commercial enterprises and ethical causes: the first half of August is especially good for sales, PR, advertising or just getting the message across about a service you provide. Later in the month, at last there’s a chance to get a better sense of what’s going on in your financial world – one that’s caused headaches this year as you worry about income. If planning a trip, litigation, study or some other break from routine, aim to firm up details after the 19th when Mercury moves direct.
December 22-January 20
Many of you will have experienced recent setbacks in cash supply or in formulating a plan designed to boost income. Since late June, Mars has reversed in your chart house of assets, tending to thwart good intentions. No matter what you do, people you work or campaign with have let you down. This trend won’t last, of course. Late August, Mars moves direct in your own sign of Capricorn, adding power to something you initiated back in early May: later, in September, financial improvement will follow as a direct result of decisions made in late August. Also on the material theme, the solar eclipse on the 11th encourages fundamental changes you’re working on within yourself – a slow process after at least one big life change of late – as well greater cooperation with a partner or supplier of money. If you can wait until after the 19th (preferably into September) you’ll be in a much better position to form contracts or make agreements with people who can enable you to materialise plans.
January 21-February 19
August starts with a sense of frustration as dear old thrusting Mars has gone all passive and is moving backwards in your sign. Quite a few people in your circle will have got the wrong end of the stick with you and given you a piece of their mind, leaving you somewhat ragged as you wonder what did you do. Look at the bigger cosmic picture and you’ll see that even the hiccups serve big purposes. The solar eclipse on the 11th raises questions about certain key relationships – business and intimate. If people are misunderstanding you, perhaps the time has come to point them to the exit door. This is not the only scenario. The eclipse sets tests – a great relationship will thrive on difficulties; but a weak one will tremble as worn joints fall apart. The Achilles Heel could be more philosophical than anything else. Why do you constantly have to defend your position or explain your ideas? If this fits you, take the ecliptic hint and look around for new allies, friends, a lover, even a partner, with whom you can travel this life with a shared intent. Remember: Aquarius may be humanitarian but it’s not tolerant. Admit it to yourself.
February 20-March 20
Expansive Jupiter still has the power to take you away. Where? That’s not my business. It’s yours. You decide where this other place is – be it abroad, at a college, in a court or in a place entirely new to you. Ideals this month continue to dominate your thinking – ideals being those lasers that point to intended destinations where life is ‘better’ (for you, may be for others, too). Yet despite this upbeat development, in yourself you sense the risks of powerlessness. Life is continuing to take you on unintended detours; your plans of action somehow melt away. This should not worry you. There’s a value in trusting life to take us to the next point for take-off, even if the route looks ‘scenic’. The solar eclipse on the 11th asks you to take better care of the mind and body, to improve diet and look into wellness issues. Is it possible that this sense of ‘powerlessness’ has a lot to do with nutrition or exhaustion? The eclipse offers you a half-year window to nurture you. It’s down to you to get up to speed.
