Ethical Hedonist astrology
Horoscope by Victor Olliver
March 21-April 20
Something of the Gemini flavour enters your life because your ruling planet Mars is travelling through this sign now and through the solar 3rd house, the chart place of Gemini. This adds to your busy-ness, chattiness, social activities, communications… and busy-body-ness. If a secret is squirrelled away you’re sure to be on to it, with those Hilda Ogden-style hair curlers acting as antennae (and disguised mega-phone!). Writing, speaking, teaching, sales of any kind – any one of these will preoccupy and more than probably be the means to your destination or objective. The days around the 12th are especially positive as Mars aligns nicely with Jupiter, favouring commercial, sales, financial, romantic or social projects. As with all the other signs, Venus’ return to Aries may see you covering old ground or some issue from February – hopefully, you’re working on your image and fashion statements because this is the time to dress to impress. Though power struggles might tax you professionally or with authority in the second half of May, by end of month, a key figure (perhaps with significant links overseas) is much more in tune with dynamic you. Yes, May like April is super-lively.
April 21-May 21
It’s not that you mean to be (or are) furtive by nature, but there’s something in your life that is distinctly secret, cloaked, veiled, hidden away or the subject of confidentiality. This is because your ruler Venus has returned to Aries (normally the noisiest of signs) but in a part of the chart that has to do with ‘shadows’. Or those secrets I mentioned. It could be that there’s a need now to conduct yourself with enhanced discretion. Perhaps a set of circumstances can only evolve in your favour if kept in the dark. We’ve all been there. One word out of line and a complex set-up collapses like a house of cards – all because we could not keep our traps shut. Venus here also inclines you to sanctuaries and other domains of sanity-preservation away from Selfie-Hell. Health spas have the best of both worlds because in these places mindfulness makes a virtue of clean hedonism. Money is on your mind throughout May – particularly how to make more. Hard work I’m afraid is the answer, judging by the place of Jupiter, which proves very useful around the 12th. Otherwise by the end of May you’ve reason to be feeling a lot more optimistic about the moolah. A partner or financial institution could be key.
May 22-June 21
Life really did slow down rather in April. We could blame your ruler Mercury which starts May in retrograde. But then on the 3rd it turns direct in Aries – which is another way of saying that you’ll feel some sort of rocket firing off in a place not unadjacent to the seat of your pants. The life area for this possibly alarming if not unpleasant experience will be to do with an organisation (commercial or otherwise), or your business or your social networks or with a particular treasured dream. In all likelihood, this take off (or even possibly, striking out on your own) is linked to events of late March when you may have first been tempted to do something markedly independent. If there’s any doubt about this, then watch events around the 9th-11th when Mercury hits Uranus. It will be a rare Gemini who does not do something very surprising (Oh dear, Mr Trump is a Gemini…), which amazes or shocks or sets you on a new pathway, if not literally then psychologically. By mid-month, when Mercury moves into calmer Taurus, one feature of your life has changed big-time – and for the rest of May, you are advised to lay low or lie down in a darkened room and imbibe some relaxing fume or drink. Take this good advice, and by end of May, career and finances look distinctly more promising.
June 22-July 22
What a lovely soul-searcher you are. And this is especially the case right now what with Jupiter reversing in your house of the family and home, Saturn reversing in house of work and health and Pluto plotting backwards in house of relationships. These planetary retrogrades are nothing to fear: in astrology they tend to alert us to inner needs or to matters which require further consideration. Already naturally thoughtful, you have an enhanced capacity to reflect at this time – which in the real world could leave you a bit distracted. Friends or colleagues may say to you, “’Ere, are you listening, Ada? You seem far away!” Don’t worry about that. Take full advantage of life’s gifts of time to contemplate, cogitate and meditate. It’s at times like these that you can plan for later changes. Still, there’s enough going on to keep you preoccupied. Career or public duty matters will be excitable, especially in the first half of May – many of you will be changing the way you work or your routines or even direction. Days around the 19th are especially useful for gearing career-linked changes to practical considerations, so that the risk of disruption is minimised. New Moon on the 25th marks a brief period ahead, going into June, when you should take time out to give yet further thought to what you need and wants. A short break in a forest hideaway would be perfection.
July 23-August 23
Well, that restlessness I’ve banged on about is reaching its climax. Yes! Yes! Yes! Mercury’s move direct on the 3rd, and its merging with Uranus on the 10th, is a pretty good reason to expect a very sudden acceleration of change in your life, even if all you’ve planned is a holiday. ‘Change’ can mean many things, from how you see things or what you’re prepared to consider to a literal shift in direction or a decision made to do something with life-changing potential (usual examples include a new study course, joining a campaign group, moving or going overseas – even litigation!). ‘Change’ may also include an event that compels you to rearrange your life. So how big or small ‘change’ is to you will depend on your life circumstances – and this is where as astrologer I acknowledge my limitations. I cannot know the particulars of your life. Cosmically, though, the exciting bumpy ride is there waiting for you. Around the 19th could be a time of unusual excitement when Venus and Jupiter reach opposition in the chart area to do with the balance between small things and big things in your life. If you can aim for balance and a degree of compromise between competing needs then May could just turn out to be rather gorgeous. But if you want it all OR refuse even to acknowledge your instinct to expand your life then ready yourself for some teeth gnashing. But I have a feeling that your molars are safe.
August 24-September 22
Rarely have you felt so strongly. The theme of this is you and what you think you’re about. Virgo is rather adept at just getting on with things, grumbling maybe about this fault or that, but getting on and being practical. You can martyr yourself just so life can get on because you don’t like fusses (which is odd, because you can be the ultimate fusspot). Ruler Mercury is going backwards and forwards in the chart area associated with self-improvement – and because Uranus is involved in this journey, your own instincts, emotional needs, spiritual concerns and practical wisdom are implicated. Something has got you roused up to a pitch – and watch the second week of May when you decide to go for it and do something you would not have dreamt possible before now. It doesn’t matter if whatever we’re talking about is not completed this month. Something is initiated with long-term potential for life alteration. Money and emotions are bound up in all this – and a partner too, possibly. From mid-month on, spiritually or literally, your head has moved on with new things and plans. It’s not all plain sailing, naturally. Ambitions to forge ahead could be constrained by home duties under Saturn, especially towards the end of May. You’ll just have to accept certain realities. Do that and you need not fear ultimate blockage.
September 23-October 23
Ah lovely. Ruler Venus is now back in the solar house of Venus. Ain’t that the thing! May should feel like a return to form. Actually Venus was here back in February but then she reversed, and what looked so promising turned out to appear like a false start. This might have been to do with a relationship of any kind (business or intimate), with business or money or with any kind of negotiation. Venus’ return to the house of Venus (or Libra) marks a new certainty: if there really was a false start in February then use this month to learn from any mistake and make the most of the planet’s healing balm. If there was merely a delay, then be confident that May is a month to make rapid progress. For this to happen, you will need to draw on charm, diplomacy, negotiation and reaching out to others. Don’t be afraid to ask. Venus is at maximum intensity for you to grow through cooperation and joint enterprise. You’ll have to be measured in your expectations: with Jupiter in your sign, growth is a greatly enhanced potential – but its other side can be unrealistic ambition, so keep your mind and promises pegged to what you know to be realisable. The overall advice is to play the long, slow game. Think of escargots.
October 23-November 22
One thing for sure, we are living in times of rapid work revolution. More and more of us are working from home, or irregular hours, or in jobs once the perceived province of the opposite sex. Something of all of this is impacting on your life right now. Perhaps you have struggled to adapt to new ways of working or you’re striving to bring about change in daily routines. The pattern of your life is under review. Mercury’s recent comings and goings in your house of work have something to do with this. But revolutionary Uranus is also in this chart spot, moving very, very slowly – ensuring that you really are part of the zeitgeist. Watch around the 10th of this month for a very sudden development to do with work habits and daily routines: it could just be that life can be so very much more satisfying if you accommodate new ways and attitudes to toil. Change is also the theme of your emotional life – with co-ruler Mars moving through house of inner exploration. Actually in many of your dealings with others you may be more aggressive than usual – and certainly partners of all sorts will be well aware of your pushiness and get-up-and-go. By end of May, this energy is most excellent for work even if finances are a reminder of limitations.
November 23-December 21
Saturn’s retrograde since early April has left you rather feeling suspended. It’s as if you’re frozen in time – or something feels as if it has come to a halt. The not-welcome news is that this is set to continue until late August. But there’s good news… and it has to do with the nature of being ‘suspended’. As you hang (so to speak), watching the world go by, you get to notice things you might otherwise overlook. You may even notice things about yourself which can be empowering and liberating. It’s during phases of this sort that the biggest changes in ourselves occur because the object of analysis is…you. Each day may not feel always great yet already you can see in yourself the capacity to stretch abilities and make the most of what you have. Close relationships are touched by this process. And with Mars opposite Saturn, it’s likely a partner or someone in your social world is stirring you up, kicking against you or otherwise reminding you that beyond the four walls there’s a big world out there continuing to spin, waiting for you to rejoin. This month, a special interest spurs you on either because of a surprise development or a sudden perverse decision on your part – probably around the 10th. Social life picks up in the third week – and there could be a fair bit of self-indulgence. That’s more like it!
December 22-January 20
It’s all happening at home! Or is it at work? Ooh, it’s hard to say. Is it that something in the family’s holding you back? Or is it that career’s getting in the way of your good judgement? Why can’t life just be nice and straightforward!? But, look, it’s not my task to complicate things so here it is for your consideration. This month there’s a no-turning-back event or decision at home. Enough of your whining. You may surprise yourself given your epic ability to delay making a decision. Yet to be fair the situation domestically is complicated. Something has to give and you know in your heart what that is. Uranus with Mercury’s promptings will break down the odd psychological wall and let in some more light. If the tension is between home and work, then this happening will enable you to forge ahead. Jupiter in your career house wants you to grow, get promoted and enjoy the performance of status display. Jupiter is strengthening in your favour. But please take things at a reasonable pace. Later in May Mars opposes your ruler Saturn in the areas of work and psychology. This stops you from doing nothing. It just indicates that you’d do well to harness all your work activity to what can reasonably be done – by you! So don’t get ahead of yourself. Like you would!
January 21-February 19
What is that awful racket? Oh, it’s you. Aquarius is readying for a humdinger of a month when creative and expressive powers hit a peak – so, the world should prepare for an abundance of weirdness from you. This has been coming for some time now, with Mercury in Aries moving direct early May and then hitting your ruler Uranus around the 10th – you will say or do or decide something that marks you out as an independent for sure (as if anyone doubted it). But also Venus is now moving direct – in Aries. We may have to go back to February for a return to certain people in your circle and see what they are up to. You may experience some déjà vu as a situation you thought long gone reappears – with the difference this time that you’re primed to act far more decisively than before. Potentially, this really is a month for a good time and life expansion, stretching yourself well beyond other people’s corseting-minds, perhaps taking you overseas or at least into new territory. My advice is that in order to make the most of all this, for heaven’s sake be more selective of your companions/work-mates/friends/whoever. Find people with fresh energy, bold spirits, a can-do philosophy and the readiness to keep you in check (within reason). This mood will be infectious. Get infected!
February 20-March 20
We talked about money last month – and the theme stays with you in May, though this time there’s less faffing about and more executive decisions being made. With Venus in your house of income and assets, and now moving direct, a financial complication or negotiation that’s been with you almost all this year stands a good chance of resolution – and in your favour if you can quite focus on managing expectations and/or partners. The peril is that others (probably) in your world are trying to lure you into thinking bigger than current life can sustain. There’s no harm in ambition, but unrestrained ambition is as useless as negative thinking. Take personal responsibility for managing your money matters and don’t try to delegate. It’s amazing how shrewd Pisces can be – you are gifted with a clairvoyante ability to tap a mood or tendency. Use it to get into the minds of those who are in a position to give you more. The 25th especially is a day to beware power struggles that could impact against you. The 28th is a superb day to attune yourself to people and gather what they are about and reward yourself as a consequence. Remember this: current money issues are not really about money as such, but about you and your gifts. What are these gifts worth? The answer to that question improves with a settled self-respect. ‘Weigh’ your gifts, steer their worth.
