Ethical Hedonist astrology
Horoscope by Victor Olliver
March 21-April 20
This is an electric month when a greater focus on money, doing things your way and sorting out a relationship are the highlights. Let’s take each one in turn. 1. Money: even if you’re lounging about at your weekend Mar-a-Lago-style estate as you read this, the business of improving financial returns or getting a good price for your goods or services is the priority. This reaches its climax around the 4th to 7th when ruler Mars links up nicely with Pluto: ring-a-ding-kerching! Something is paying off. 2. My Way: at the best of times you’re prone to taking the indie line, but come the 13th to 15th time slot and you’re amazing everyone with a bold, possibly reckless and certainly maverick action or decision. This will act to break up any situation that’s grown stale. 3. The Relationship: Full Moon on the 11th sets a fortnight-long episode in which, in order to get the best out of a partner, an agent of any kind or a friend, you need to compromise. This won’t be easy! Never mind, with your funds refreshed, how about sampling a high-end green fashion label like Marni? Even the jewellery is from recycled sources, like vinyl records.
April 21-May 21
If life feels like it’s moving in reverse then blame your ruler Venus which went retrograde a while back, bringing people from your past back into your life (not all of them welcome) or dragging your focus to ‘better’ times when you were just a lad/lassie. But I have news. The retrograde ends on the 15th. Thereafter you start to appreciate just how useful the zombie-thon of the past has been. You’ve had to reflect on the contrasting present, on the people you work or socialise with, on your dreams and who’s in your ‘team’ helping you realise them. Perhaps even some very close contacts are not as supportive as you’d wish. As Venus moves forward, remember all of this and aim to re-energise your social world, perhaps seeking out new contacts because it’s so hard in this life to achieve anything without support and cooperation. This month, the rebel in you rises up and asserts the right to be free both of the past and of other people’s expectations. You may not tell anyone immediately for this is likely to be a quiet but powerful revolution.
May 22-June 21
May 22-June 21
I know, life seems a bit on the quiet side after recent dramas. Think of yourself as ‘resting’ like some old movie drama queen who’s saving herself for the best scene yet while all the other luvvies flap about trying to remember their lines. The key word so far is ‘seems’. Much is happening elsewhere. Actually, anywhere you’re not. It’s as if life’s movie director has moved the set to a different location and not invited you along. And with ruler Mercury in reverse or retrograde from the 9th, my advice is: enjoy the ‘exclusion’! Enjoy letting others get on with whatever it is they’re doing. For in some way you are involved, you are being included, but it’s not your lot to be steering the action. Then around the 28th, ready yourself for a surprise that’s linked in some way to something big you did (or nearly did) or said (or nearly said) in late March: you may have cause to wonder afresh about what’s for the best. Early days May will see you move in a new direction. With all this time on your hands, read Karen Ehman’s Let. It. Go. Study Guide: How to Stop Running the Show and Start Walking in Faith. Just what the astrologer ordered.
June 22-July 22
Your ‘public’ life (usually called career) may require some adjustment in relation to family or private life this month (or vice versa). Since this has been an on-off theme for some time, this won’t come as much of a surprise. The omens are that you can make necessary corrections or changes which free you up to do more of what you want to do. Take the Libra Full Moon on the 11th, for instance. This is the start of a two-week key phase to bring certain domestic matters to a head or to deal with some kind of domestic situation that demands a response: this need not be a crisis, it could simply to do with basic things like plumbing; but more likely an emotional or ‘care’ matter needs managing. This impacts on career to some extent because time is money. On the other hand, the Taurus New Moon on the 26th takes you out of the home and points you at social/professional networks or the money side of business. Here’s a good point to make a decision, to start-up or to resolve to expand your social realm. April is certainly a month for shaking up the career side: with Sun merging with Uranus around mid-month you could be making a decision that surprises even you.
July 23-August 23
Hello Mr or Ms Restless. Oh, how you are pining/longing/dreaming! If only life could be so much… bigger! Astrologically this is because ruler Sun and cosmic stirrer Uranus are in that part of your chart that governs the greener grass ‘over there’, wherever there is. Holidays are usually the way to sample the greener grass (so to speak); but in your case there’s more to it than that because Uranus is a slow mover and is set upon introducing you to all sorts of new experiences for a long time yet, not just a lovely stay at the (for example) dah-vine, Lord of the Rings-style Bryn Elltyd at the foot of Wales’ Moelwyn mountains – a B&B powered entirely by renewable energy, btw. For some that would be adventure enough. But Mr or Ms Leo has much bigger ambitions. The 12th to 16th is certainly a time for extraordinary happenings which relate in some way to this mega-pang for change/adventure. Many of you may suddenly decide to embark on a study course, or just move abroad. Is it that easy? No, but then if you think about anything too long you end up not getting up in the morning. From the 26th career questions arise to take you into May: it’s hard to keep up with you.
August 24-September 22
Such a fuss is made of Mercury retrograde that you’d think the world stops turning during its operation. In effect, all this cosmic illusion alerts us to are the joys of being granted more time to examine, plan, endure or review. In your case, with the retro starting on the 9th (running for just three weeks, for heaven’s sake), you’d be most wise to pay greater attention to a plan intended to take you away from day-to-day routines or to anything linked to litigation, holidays or study. And from the 20th, keep your eyes peeled for any slip-ups or deception in financial documents over loans or property or even inheritance. This Mercury retro is also excellent for partnership discussions which first time around may have not been entirely successful (perhaps around late March). Mid-month, property or shared cash issues could take centre-stage as events take an unexpected turn – and it could be you driving the ‘turn’ as you’re in no mood to be messed about. New Moon on the 26th is the first sign of the right moment to take an adventurous step provided you remain alert to my updated Murphy’s Law (i.e. if it can go wrong it will – if there isn’t a Virgo in the house to go over the small print).
September 23-October 23
The long ruler Venus retrograde now returns to the house of health and… hamsters. No, I’m not joking. The solar 6th house rules both our health and lifestyles and little furry pet animals, like hamsters. OK, maybe you don’t have a hamster and regard the feather duster as the only useful ‘furry’ thing, but the lesson here is to pay attention to the ‘little people’ in your life, those you disdainfully think of as virtual hamsters. These creatures can have a sharp bite if unloved. In broader, non-hamster terms, do please also resolve now to truly embrace those ethical hedonistic day-to-day habits to help repair the body (and mind) beautiful. The 2017 runway mega-boosters are: cauliflower (stop laughing), watermelon water, tiger nuts and fizzy tea (Google it). On the 15th, Venus turns direct in your house of health management – and this impacts on ‘life management’ too: strive to strip back on the unnecessary: refine, make lean and orderly: in other words, declutter. The acts of stripping away the superfluous will encourage you to take this approach to people and situations, too: lessen the personal load. Carry less baggage for what’s ahead – the possibility of a new relationship (business or intimate) in May.
October 23-November 22
This is your reach-out month. By this I mean, your natal reserve and reluctance to open up to people is set aside as you recognise the need to communicate more directly. The first week of April sets the tone for the rest of the month when passion, deep belief, conviction or research/investigation is a feature of communications. And you’re not talking to anybody. Your listener could be a partner of any kind, an agent, a friend or close ally or some other person acting in your name. There could be contention. But if you stay practical and true to personal values, this can be a remarkably important time to win over cooperation. All this sounds heavy yet the mood should be a lot lighter in general as Venus re-enters your house of passions and pleasures – right planet for that! Around the 15th or at any time in the second half of the month, whatever you’re up to, stay true to projects or plans that harness your gifts and strengths. The overall message is to assert who you are and not hide behind coded nods and winks and lookaway gazes.
November 23-December 21
Having Saturn in your sign since December 2014 has not been a bag of laughs, has it? But look at the changes since then! Many of you will have been released from tiresome situations as you determined to be truer to self, even if the legacy is a certain degree of ambient anxiety. You’ll have to wait till the end of 2017 before Saturn wends its weary way into Capricorn. Meantime, April looks like a pick-up month after recent concerns. Mid-month sees an explosion of personal energy as life measures up with an opportunity to advance a personal interest. This may surprise some people in your circle, but who cares? Life must move on. And New Moon on the 26th augurs a new cycle in which health, nutrition and lifestyle play a bigger part in your wellbeing. Whether it’s new probiotic water to clean out the gut or eating only purple food (‘Purple kale, purple carrots, purple cauliflower, purple broccoli and purple potatoes are all amazingly rich in anthocyanins….’ all of which helps with disease prevention – Daily Mail), focus on the temple of your body for you may have experienced in recent times what can go wrong when you eat s***. Is that a rocket taking off? No, it’s your average Sag with renewed vigour back to form.
December 22-January 20
What we call a ‘bumpy ride’ (sounds ominous, but…) is often rather exciting. Perhaps you don’t like turbulence on a flight yet the fun of recounting the experience over cocktails after you’ve safely landed has its fun side. So, yes, April could be a bit of a bumpy ride, at least until the 21st. The agent of bumpiness is Mars in your house of ‘boring details’ – in other words, work is heavy and you’re in the mood to push on with something against the tide. With Mars in Taurus (sign of the bull – try to stop that once it charges you, horns ready for a-tossing)), you stand a great chance of success, but of course people will backstab and stick pins in your voodoo doll. Early April is your time of enhanced strength as Pluto (in a fellow earth sign like Taurus) links favourably with Mars, raising your authority and granting you additional determination. By the 26th, under Taurus New Moon, you’re quite ready to razzle-dazzle in your own name as a personal project (or even [bro]romance) assumes a position of strength. Suddenly the bumpy ride feels more like a journey into the tunnel of love/lust/mirror image.
January 21-February 19
You’re at that time of the year when your birth-right eccentricities become all too apparent. This is because the Sun (which represents your identity) merges with Uranus (the modern sign that rules Aquarius), tending to radiate those qualities that cause us to love you (and despair of you on occasion). Mid-month is the approximate time for this flare up of genius/exhibitionism/idiosyncrasy/outrageousness/unexpected turns. The matter may be small or large: size is not the issue. The test is the extent to which you confound your friends and enemies by doing or saying something that appals/shocks/inspires/causes swooning. The upshot will be a change of some kind – and, no, you will not learn your lesson to be ‘good’ in future. You will carry on as you are. Life this month is certainly urging you to think big and adventurously. The 11th’s Full Moon favours a holiday, publishing or any kind of change of direction. The 26th’s New Moon turns attention to the home or family: as you enter May, thoughts of moving, redecorating or telling a loved one where to sling their hook could preoccupy.
February 20-March 20
Money. Yes you want more – don’t we all. In your case, life itself is bringing the money situation to your attention, either through bills or estimates or arguments or your own increased awareness that what you get depends a lot on personal valuation. Think poor, get underpaid! But let’s look at the upside. With intuitive Uranus in your house of income (for a while yet), your basic material instincts are enhanced. Around the 15th of April, there’s a surprise chance to make progress financially, and your own actions could be the author of this change. Caution nonetheless is required because Mercury is reversing in this house from the 9th – the retrograde may also signal that you’re getting a second chance to improve a situation affecting resources. If this is the case, May is the month to look for tangible signs that you’re on the right path. What may help you is your image. Work on looking your best, especially as Venus turns direct mid-month in your own sign of Pisces and house of potential gorgeousness. A makeover will help you in personal advancement. Vogue says adorn your person in light and colour this season. Think peacock under a spotlight, with metallic effects. Blind your audience!
