Catherine Capon, naturalist and wildlife presenter reports from Borneo on a project to rehabilitate and protect rescued orangutans and eventually re-introduce them back into the wild. Orangutans are becoming critically endangered in Indonesia due to the loss of rainforest, pulled down to make way for mono culture palm oil production and open cast coal mining.
Cat’s report shows areas of the rainforest that have been de-forested, and contrasts this with a successful restoration of the forest, once illegally logged. It is hoped that this protected area of the forest will provide a vital home for Indonesia’s displaced great apes.
