Imagine a twinkling, slow luxe Scandi fabric fashioned to adorn the most charismatic of sofas with the stellar quality of a shimmering Dior, new look coat – this is Bemz’s new Silver Grey Brinken Herringbone fabric – a design jewel born out of science, thrift and sartorial alchemy that wouldn’t look out of place on Savile Row.
The new Bemz Respect Collection features six fabulously sustainable soft furnishing fabrics – from the drama of an ink black mélange – to a startling, intense Arctic white – each fabric exuding the confidence and personality of its brilliant, sustainable metamorphosis – to look de rigeur – whether you adore shabby chic, vintage grandeur – or you are more of a sleek modernist.
Lustrous Furniture Fabrics Upcycled from Fashion Waste
Fashion lovers prepare to fall head over heels with Bemz’s squeaky clean, slow luxe credentials. These covetable, lustrous new fabric stars are upcycled from textile waste from the fashion industry along with a dash of polyester manufactured from plastic bottles to add durability and longevity – poverty luxe is the new luxury – tell all your friends.
Poverty Luxe is the New Luxury
The story begins when leftover fabrics from fashion houses are collected, sorted by colour, shredded, and then ground back to cotton fibres. The recycled fibre is then spun into new cotton yarn, ready to be woven into a sumptuous new textile created by the design team at Bemz.
Very good, you say, ‘that’s what recycling is all about’ – well the story doesn’t quite end there. The new, high quality yarn is created without using one drop of water or dye, as a result of an innovative new process, developed at a state of the art, sustainable mill in Spain. Luxury and thrift? – We like it! We just adore a paradox. Now, that is an idea to get very excited about indeed.
Alchemy and Innovation
Bemz are certainly very proud of their beautiful, ingenious new slow luxe fabrics.
“Our design team has been on the lookout for a high-‐quality, sustainable cotton fabric with a robust texture to add to our textile collection for a while now. At last, thanks to modern technology, we’ve found what we were looking for – an environmentally friendly textile that comes in a number of beautiful shades,” says Lisbeth Toivonen, Creative Director at Bemz.
This is the brave new world of sustainable luxury – A world where science and reinvention rules the roost. A world that Bemz’s founder, Lesley Pennington, inhabits with ease and a pioneering spirit.
Lesley came up the idea for Bemz, whose initials are an anagram for the children in her life, after she fell in love with Fredrik, a Swede whilst working for the Apple Corporation in California. Soon, she had moved countries, embraced a Scandi life, and found herself shopping in Ikea for a sofa for the family summerhouse.
An IKEA Sofa Gives Birth to a Brilliant Business Idea
“It was relatively simple to find a sofa that could fit into the casual living space at our summer house, but not as easy to find the right colour and the right fabric for the sofa in order to achieve exactly the look that I wanted.”
Thus the germ of a brilliant business idea was born and Lesley combined her design and technology background to start making beautiful loose covers, so that the rest of us could personalize our habitat – a simple idea, that remarkably, no one else had thought of doing.
What will Bemz and Lesley Pennington Do Next?
Now Pennington exports to thirty-five countries and she is keen to make Bemz a trailblazer for personal expression and sustainable living. We live in such exciting times, where innovation and intelligent use of resources is blooming. What will Lesley and Bemz will do next? – whatever it is, it is bound to be startling, beautiful and as astonishing as a Philip Treacy hat.
The Bemz commitment to the environment runs deep, with a business concept based on extending the life of IKEA furniture by offering an extensive range of gorgeous loose covers. But it does not stop there: the Bemz business model limits waste and strain on resources by only producing what customers have ordered and all product manufacturing takes place in its biggest market, Europe, keeping shipping distances short.
