Daniel Galvin Junior: The Most Important Man in My Life Apart from Mr Darcy!
“ I never do things by the book,” declares Daniel Galvin Junior, as he studies my hair with all the fastidiousness of a surgeon about to perform keyhole surgery. For this is the kind of passion and razor-like attention to detail DGJ is fabled for as one of the world’s leading hair colourists.
To the press and that rarefied inner circle of pop divas, press, IT girls and ladies with oligarch husbands – Daniel is known simply as ‘The King of Colour’. The man who can help a woman to mislay a decade, simply by painting the hair with light, colour and shade, with his celebrated ‘cosmetics for hair technique’. Though I prefer to think of a him as a prince of colour – for now in his forties, he is ridiculously, preternaturally handsome, in a Gone with the Wind, Rhett Butlerish sort of way, and the best advert I know for living an organic life; for he radiates vitality, good health and has skin that looks almost translucent.
Painting the Hair with Reverse Colour, Light and Shade
As you can imagine, Daniel, is one of the most important men in my life. He keeps my hair looking extraordinary; especially following my very reckless decision to become a redhead last winter! On balance it was briefly fun and seasonal, but my hair landed up looking harsh and one dimensional, which as Daniel explains is the quickest way to look older. So we have been slowly and carefully returning my hair to the colour that suits me best – a fairy halo of spun titian antique gold, bathing my pale skin and blue eyes in light, texture and movement. DGJ is always moving forward, and today he tells me he is excited about a technique he calls ‘reverse lighting.’
Daniel is a Leader, Not a Follower, and Takes a Bold, Informal Approach to Hair Colour
“Whether your hair is grey or you are in your twenties – colour build up from years of hair colouring looks ageing,” explains Daniel. “Hair can also appear frizzy, stripy and lack body. Our approach is to be bold and less formal. Reverse colour breaks up flat, one dimensional colour. We weave the client’s natural colour tones, or warmer hues back into underneath layers of the mid lengths and ends to create instant contrast and movement. The result is beautiful, supremely natural looking hair full of light, interest and shade with stellar swishability – because style is eternal.”
When Daniel has finished correcting my colour and my tresses have been pinned and expertly dried into a waterfall of swishy waves; I am thrilled with the outcome. DGJ is a genius. He gives a girl what no doctor, therapist or endless holistic spa sessions can achieve – confidence. Suddenly, I looked as if I have just come back from two weeks on the Amalfi coast with my Mr Darcy, instead of sitting staring wistfully at my laptop dreaming of a halycon summer.
Gentle Hairdressing with Minimal Chemicals and Pampering Organic Shampoos and Treatments
It is also good to know that Daniel is a pioneer in a more holistic, gentle approach to hairdressing. Chemical colour processes are kept to the absolute minimum, to achieve a great result. While your hair will be bathed and styled in DGJ’s, rejuvenating, high performance range of Organic Head shampoos and styling aids, smelling of grass and wildflower meadows!
Now I am ready to go and meet my friend Chantal Coady at Rococo Chocolate to discuss some more heavenly EH and Rococo events involving seriously good organic chocolate, slow food and the art of good conversation.
