Meet Elizabeth Barbalich – a glam, green-eyed, head-turning scientist who is shaking up the world of organic and natural beauty, with her cult beauty marque Antipodes, where the most pristine, active ingredients meet in a perfect dance with hard science and an effortless sense of grown up glamour. Let me tell you it all smells like New Zealand in a jar. For our interview, Elizabeth is wearing the most intense shade of red lipstick called Hit Me With Your Best Shot. Yes, that’s right – A dangerously sexy shade of natural lipstick without the usual cocktail of ingredients you wouldn’t want to eat, and a sense of humour too. Now please form an orderly queue.

This fun, vibrant, quirky beauty brand first caught my eye at the Organic Show at Olympia. This is the formula – harness the incredible properties of New Zealand’s native plants and flowers, carry out rigorous scientific trials and blind tests, to ensure the anti-ageing packed cocktail of nature’s pharmacopeia delivers impressive results, then give the cleansers and moisturises names like Juliet, Grace and Rejoice, and watch the Facebook generation fall in love.
Elizabeth represents a new breed of green-preneur. She has a background in pure science, together with a passion for preserving the natural world for her children and future generations. Elizabeth spends her free time hiking, making music and not watching television. What makes Antipodes really standout in a sea of natural brands is that is a perfect synthesis of exciting, effective super natural ingredients, unique to New Zealand, and all backed by hard science and validation in scientific trials. The star ingredient in the range is Vinanza Grape. Due to the high levels of UVA in New Zealand, this hardy grape variety has the highest antioxidant levels of any grape grown on the planet. Now think what that can do for a girl’s complexion.
Star Product – Antipodes Avocado Pear Night Cream, with avocado oil, healing calendula from marigold flowers and Vinanza grape for a burst of powerful antioxidant regeneration – It sounded almost too good to be true; I was told that this ‘Dream Cream’ has been scientifically proven to boost collagen production in the lab by a remarkable 92%. Then I tried it. Not only is it a delight to use, with the silkiest, creamiest texture of any cream I have ever tried. Then there is the smell. Prepare to daydream that you have been carried off to the desserts of Arabia, with warm, heady top notes of ylang ylang, jasmine and sandalwood. The next day my skin appeared almost translucent, with a lustrous, plump, glow of mother of pearl.
With a growing fan base in nine countries, Antipodes has managed to achieve something few natural brands have grasped – the perfect marriage of science and nature without the silly and meaningless scientific claims.
Some more products I really like:
Divine Face Serum with rosehip and avocado oils to nourish, repair and replenish the skin. This lovely serum imparts and instant glow, and mostly importantly, a matt finish. Hooray! So it doesn’t leave the usual, deeply unattractive oil slick on the face. You can apply, radiate and go.
I’m also a fan of the Grapeseed Butter Cleanser – This is sunshine in a jar, a great way to deeply cleanse, polish and feed your senses in one go, without having to mess around with multiple products.
