Daniel Galvin Junior Opens Stellar, Organic Salon in the Heart of Fashionable London

June 4, 2010 in Slow Luxury Fashion

After a whirlwind week of interviews with the erudite and fascinating Simon Callow and Ashley Jensen, a Princess of Comedy, it was a rare treat to walk through the newly painted black door of No 4, West Halkin Street, in the heart of Belgravia. I’ve come to meet hair maestro Daniel Galvin Junior, and to experience my own organic and super natural hair makeover. Would I leave feeling like Ugly Betty or the scintillating Lady Gaga?

Daniel is fascinated by the therapeutic and rejuvenating properties of plants and flowers, many discovered on his trips to the gardens of Highgrove to formulate products for Prince’s Charles’s pioneering Duchy line of organic shampoos, soaps and shower gels. It all started back in the late nineties, when Daniel decided to banish toxins from his diet and embrace an organic lifestyle. Soon he started to think about the ingredients in everyday personal care products and formulated his first ‘Hair Juice’, back in the millennium, when the idea of organic beauty wasn’t even on the radar of most beauty editors.

Daniel is the pied piper of organic hairdressing, and he is certainly a great advert for a chemical free lifestyle. He looks ridiculously healthy; and I am sure he won’t mind me telling you; he’s handsome too! And yes, he firmly believes the future of hairdressing is going to be sublimely organic, and all about looking very good naturally, without harm to you or the planet.

The salon is high octane, sexy, intimate and incredibly friendly for such a stellar address. This is where Ms Carrie Bradshaw would come for a hot new makeover, or some bespoke, holistic pampering with Daniel’s individual hair prescriptions loaded with herbs, vitamins, essential oils and antioxidants.

Let me tell you why. After two years of incredible hard work and planning, Daniel has assembled his dream salon and his team of talented stylists. Take Mawit, three years ago, she arrived as a rather retiring Prince’s Trust Apprentice; now after gaining her NVQ in hairdressing and plenty of nurturing and encouragement from Daniel and her peers, she has blossomed into a talented stylist, and a great favourite with clients.  The DGJ experience is all about perfection, attention to detail and leaving the salon in better shape than when you arrived. The difference? My head stylist, Ansha, talked to me throughout the session and asked how I liked to wear my hair. She also gave me simple, clever and brilliantly practical tips on how to style my hair at home, for effortless beach belle, summer locks.

For two hours, I forgot about deadlines and floated away on a very organic cloud of sweet smelling camomile as my hair was expertly cut, glossed and conditioned with some of Daniel’s good enough to eat, highly effective professional treatments. My favourite? The organic King of Colour Gloss for Blondes with a trace of gold to impart a lustrous, translucent shine. When the session was over, my hair felt like the caress of a gossamer silk dress and shone like glass.  I loved my blow dry. It looked and felt divinely glamorous, without feeling overtly styled, over over-burdened with sticky, chemical products. The best bit? The wolf whistles as I skipped down the street passed Christian Louboutin, feeling like a verdant, sweet-smelling goddess!

The salon uses Daniel’s own DGJ range of organic shampoos, glosses and treatments with Soil Association certified ingredients.
