The perfect winter coat is an essential piece of winter armour. Once found, you can face tempests and arctic conditions with stylish insouciance. Today, I’ve found my style inspiration in cinematic history. So let’s all run away to the Russian Steppes or Manchu in China!
Oh it is so easy to get carried away daydreaming about of that unforgettable scene in Dr Zhivago – where Lara, the Julie Christie character parts from Omar Sharif forever. But never mind the heartbreak! Just look at the coat she is wearing. A ravishing, peerless example of a military coat, complete with exquisite frogging. How I want that coat!
It can be hard to find a really good military coat. Moloh a small, British fashion house (and a bit of best kept secret) does the dandy look with wit, drama and a flair for historical references that set them apart from mere pastiche. Vogue calls this ‘ Le Style Anglais’ – and this season Moloh has those hard to find investment pieces. I particularly love the deliciously theatrical Commodore, £525.00, divinely elegant in grey, British wool, complete with gold, cream and silver embellishments -where it with really good boots and smart jeans.
You might also fall in love with the delightfully named Hornet Coat, £675.00. It’s also good to know that Moloh only does small runs of each design, so you are unlikely to run into anyone else in the same British made masterpiece.
I like to add to my collection of winter coats over time, and wear them according to mood and occasion. For evening, I would adore to wear my find of the season – this opulent Manchu coat by Komodo, £149.95, at Ethical Superstore, in a black and white brocade print. This is the perfect coat to throw over an evening dress in the dead of winter. The coat is made from 50% wool and 50% recycled polyester, with a clever fleece lining to keep modern snow princesses as a warm as toast. The coat comes in one size and is dry clean only.

For this season’s mannish tailoring, take a good look at Adolfo Dominguez. This Spanish fashion house, takes a playful approach to making high fashion sustainable. I’m particularly impressed with their masculine coat in knee length camel, £449.00, with two-pocket detail, a single button fastening and contrast mustard lining.
Let me tell you that polyester is no longer the Cinderella fabric of fashion. AD uses a clever, high tech mix of polyester and viscose that looks and drapes just like wool and cashmere. They also have a cute animal print coat, £259.00.
This sumptuous cocoon grey wool coat with a lovely oversized collar, £449.00, is wonderfully chic and understated. Itwill take you from the office to dinner in effortless, sustainable style.
