The Hairshack Ventnor smells more like a well-tended rose scented garden, on a high summer’s day than the kind of hairdresser you will find on most High Streets. Welcome to the hair salon of the future. The kind of place that looks more like the boudoir of a girl who adores fashion, prettiness, beauty and authenticity in all the things.
I can remember my sense of excitement when I first spotted the notice announcing that a new green and organic hair salon would be opening soon in the quirky, boho seaside town of Ventnor, on the beautiful Isle of Wight.
A few weeks later I walked past an extraordinarily pretty new shop and just had to go in and investigate. The first thing you notice is the glorious smell. This is a hair salon, but not as we know it. Forget the overpowering smell of chemical perms, hairspray that wouldn’t be out of place in a vintage episode of Coronation Street, and a rather utilitarian atmosphere, that doesn’t make you want to linger.
Once inside The Hairshack Ventnor , you will find a light-filled space, which glitters with over-sized silver picture frames, adorned with style icon images of girls who look like organic goddesses, with amazing hair, naturally! Oh and pretty nick knacks, piles of interesting magazine and plants everywhere. It all adds up to an environment that is so gently intoxicating and sublimely pampering, you will want to move in.
On impulse, I decide to have my hair blow-dried right away, and see how good this new hair salon really is. Forty-five minutes later, I emerge with a waterfall of shimmery, head turning curls, and I feel soothed and pampered. The complimentary lemongrass tea is delicious too.
If you want to have your hair transformed using gentle, organic colour, that will cover grey hair or simply have a green carpet blow dry, this is the place to gravitate. Carole Falkner, the owner has a quiet passion for natural haircare, inspired by a childhood growing up in Hampshire, where her family were strawberry growers for three generations. “I grew up eating the most wonderful, home-grown produce , making scones and dandelion wine – my parents were big into cooking too,” explains Carole.
Later, Carole moved to London and learnt classical hairdressing techniques from a brilliant, old school hairdresser in Camden Town. Now she is adept at creating this season’s ladylike, big hair blow dry or putting hair up in a messed up bedroomy, Bardoesque updo using luxurious shampoos and styling products by top session stylist turned green hair guru – Kevin Murphy. While the most natural, head-turning colour services are provided by:
TIP – Ask Carole or one of her lovely stylists to finish your hair with Kevin Murphy’s Luxury Shampoo and Conditioner
